Navigating Bits and Bytes: Hoang Nguyen, a Computer Engineering Student's Journey at KSU
March 03, 2025
Hello everyone! My name is Hoang Nguyen, and I'm a computer engineering student at Kennesaw State University. For me, this journey is more than just learning about circuits and algorithms; it's a testament to perseverance and passion. You see, I'm originally from Vietnam, and English isn't my first language. This means I often have to put in extra effort to grasp concepts that might come more naturally to native speakers.
Adapting to a new language while tackling complex engineering subjects was challenging. I quickly realized that traditional study methods wouldn't cut it. I had to become an active learner. I embraced the "active learning and active reminding" approach. This meant:
Pre-Class Preparation: I would read the textbook and watch relevant videos before each lecture, familiarizing myself with the material.
Proactive Participation: In class, I made it a point to ask questions, even if I felt hesitant. Engaging with the professor and my peers helped solidify my understanding.
Post-Class Reinforcement: Once home, I'd immediately tackle assignments, reinforcing the day's lessons while they were still fresh in my mind.
Time management became crucial. Commuting to campus presented a unique opportunity. Instead of letting it go to waste, I'd listen to technical podcasts or call my family back home. This allowed me to stay connected and productive during those otherwise idle moments. The rest of my time is dedicated to studying, and of course, maintaining a healthy balance. I try to incorporate light exercise into my routine, ensuring I stay physically and mentally fit.
It's not always easy. There are days when the concepts seem overwhelming, and the language barrier feels insurmountable. But what keeps me going is my passion for computer engineering and the discipline I've cultivated. I've learned that:
Discipline: Consistently sticking to my study schedule and time management strategies is essential for success.
Passion: My genuine interest in the field fuels my motivation and helps me overcome obstacles.
Being a computer engineering student at KSU, especially as an international student turned US citizen, has been an incredible learning experience. It's taught me the importance of adaptability, perseverance, and the power of active learning. I'm excited to see where this journey takes me, and I hope my story inspires others to pursue their passions, no matter the challenges they face.
